The golf swing tempo refers to how quickly a golfer takes the club back, hits the ball, and completes his follow through. What high speed film analysis of the golf swings of pro golfers shows is that almost all of them have a 3:1 ratio between the length of the back swing and the length of the follow through. For example, if the film shows a golfer took 27 frames of film to reach the top of his back swing, then it would take him 9 seconds to complete the swing. One way you can practice a three to one ratio is to start counting to two till you get to the top of your swing and then swing downward on three to impact the ball. This will help you to groove a smooth swing at the proper ratio and hopefully allow you to hit quality shots.

Professional golf lessons don’t usually come cheap, but there are a couple of ways you can get a free golf lesson from a professional golfer. One way is to attend one of the Play Golf America days that the PGA sponsors. During these days, which take place in communities across the country, professional golf players give free 10 minute lessons. In addition, there are golf clinics for children and adults and golfers have the chance to check out new golf equipment.

Another way to get a free golf lesson is simply to ask for it. Many professional golf instructors are willing to give a free lesson to those who are considering signing up for golf lessons. After all, you may not want to make a commitment until you see firsthand what kind of instruction you will receive and if the two of you will hit it off. Before signing up for golf lessons, ask if you can have the first one for free.

Any golfer who has been the local bookstore lately knows that there is no shortage of golf books available. I’ve read a handful of them, but I have better experiences learning through videos and live instruction. However, recently a friend lent me an old book that he found for pennies at a garage sale. It wasn’t so much an instructional tool, but it was fascinating in terms of the insight into the history of golf it provided. This read spurred me to a new ancillary hobby where I hunt down rare golf books at garage sales, at flea markets, at used bookstores and even at golf conventions. My favorite old golf books of the ones that provide anecdotes from the golfers of yesteryear.

When I began playing golf, I was stubborn. I have been stubborn in all walks of life, but it really shined through while learning golf. I had been a relatively successful athlete during high school. So when I began playing golf in college, I refused to believe I needed help. Sure, I’d take pointers from my friends, but the thought of professional golf swing lessons was outrageous to me. I made it through college without golf swing lessons, and among my circle, became a capable golfer. After college, my game stagnated. Finally, I sucked up my pride and took professional golf swing lessons. It’s a shame I hadn’t done it earlier. It transformed my game, and I am finally growing as a golfer again.

For any golfer that is new to the game, receiving good tips can drastically improve their chances of becoming a good golfer. Most golf tips for beginners focus on improving the golfers short game. The reason that many golf tips for beginner focus on the short game is becuase improving your short game can cut many strokes off of your score.

Other golf tips for beginners will focus on improving the golfer’s stroke. For example, the a golf tip to improve a beginner golfer’s swing will encourage a golfer to use a slow and controlled movement. While it is a natural reaction for a golfer to try to hit the ball as hard as possible, a hard swing is often far less accurate and will be detrimental to the distance that the ball will travel.

Stretching and warm ups are important prior to tee off. Pay attention to the shoulder muscles and hips as these are key components to the golf swing. At most pro golf events, golfers will head to the driving range and stretch before hitting some balls. Warm muscles allow the golfer to have a smooth swing and positively influence the mechanics of the drive. When practicing your swing do not immediately swing for the fences. A rushed, full power swing may lead to an injury. Control and mechanics are the keys to a long drive. Also, by arriving early enough, the golfer can take time to loosen up. These measures help to ensure that the golfer’s drive achieves longer distances.
