The summer I returned home after my first year of college, my father got me a summer job. I worked as a member of the golf course help staff at the country club where he and my Mom played. I had never been a fan of the game prior to then, but that had nothing to do with my father not trying. By this point, he had given up. This job as a member of the golf course help staff was not some part of a nefarious plot by him. However, a strange thing happened that summer. I fell in love with the game. Now as I enter graduate school, I’m happy to say that I play golf with him often. I wish I had caught on earlier.

I was giving my friend some golf instruction the other day, and he’s really been helped by it. I’m starting to wonder if I might have what it takes to become a professional instructor. I’ve been golfing for years, and people are always coming to me and asking for help. I have learned a few tricks that make it easier to teach people, and I think I’ve become pretty good at providing people with reliable golf instruction. The only question I have is whether or not the job would lose its charm once I’m doing it for a living. Things tend to become less enjoyable when you start relying on them for your income. It’s something I’ll have to think about.
