Ernie Els has been a regular on the PGA Tour and European Tour for the last two decades. During his time, he has won US Opens and competed for other major championship titles. So what has made Ernie so successful? It has everything to do with golf swing tempo. Though he didn’t invent the golf swing, Ernie has certainly adjusted how we think about big hitters.

What Ernie has shown players is that you don’t have to swing hard to hit it a long way. If you have proper golf swing tempo, you can strike the ball with power. Ernie’s iron game is a beautiful thing when he is on-point, and it is his golf swing tempo that produces the high, soft-landing shots. Players should take note of this fact if they want to find success.

Many amateur’s find themselves asking this question to professionals. In golf-related conversation, the term “golf swing tempo” can come up quite frequently. While it means different things to different golfers, it often refers to the speed at which the club rises and falls during a swing.

Golfers often talk of maintaining a consistent tempo in their swing. When saying this, they are referring to how one should keep the speed of the club as it rises the same as the speed of the club when it falls. The swing should be like a pendulum, with an even amount of time, speed and power on both the upswing and the downswing.

Golf swing tempo is something of increasing importance as a player’s skill level improves. More often than not, amateur players who are inconsistent in all areas of their game are not taking an adequate amount of time taking the club back before starting the downswing. Golf swing tempo is best used in practice by counting out evenly spaced number when taking the club back and starting down. The backswing should be slightly longer than the downswing, but not so slow that the golfer is unable to accelerate appropriately through the ball. Golf swing tempo is great for golfers who are having trouble with consistency because a good tempo provides the player with something they can repeat internally as a teaching mechanism. Metronomes are sometimes used in instruction to teach good swing tempo.

One of the most commonly overlooked elements of a player’s game is golf swing tempo. For many, fighting the urge to swing the club with maximum force is very hard to overcome. What you may find is that a more controlled swing is more effective way to approach the ball. For those who struggle with controlling their golf swing tempo, working with a golf pro is an effective way to learn ways to remain under control. Since most players have a tendency to either over or under rotate the club face as it makes contact with the ball, the harder you swing the club the more of an impact this flaw will have. A hard swing also tends to exaggerate any flaws that might be present and makes them harder to overcome.

One of the differences between a good golf player and a really great one is the ability to master your golf swing tempo. A steady and consistent tempo will make all the difference in your game.

Golf swing tempo can be mastered by following some easy steps. First, make sure your weight is balanced evenly between both your feet. When you pivot to make your swing, make sure you distribute your weight to the inside of the left foot. When impact occurs, move your weight to the front of your foot, and finally, at finish, almost all of your weight should be transferred to the outer area of the front foot. Following all these simple steps will insure you can develop an excellent golf swing tempo.

When we talk about the proper golf swing, we are really talking about a few very fine points. It is so hard to get a perfect golf swing and each person is going to have their own way of doing things. But the proper golf swing will have some similarities, no matter who is doing the swinging. So what does a proper golf swing look like?

First and foremost, the proper golf swing has good timing and good tempo. Players with a proper golf swing don’t try to kill the ball and they don’t try to swing the club quickly. They take their time, line up the shot, and follow through. Likewise, these players are always well aligned, so that they don’t have any trouble from the get go. The proper golf swing takes into account setup, first and foremost.
